Listen to me read this poem

for Katie and David

That's how things are for most women and men:
there's lego-love, children, the mortgage then
the decades of talk, privily on the pillow in the dark,
over coffee in the kitchen Sunday mornings,
sotto voce among friends...and the wordless way
a glance, the mouth, an eyebrow twitch
tell us everything...

And there is the kindness of love, which sees past
the upset and rage, beyond the wrinkle and grey hair,
to what there was before, more, to what is always there:
the person who in some unfathomable way
became you, you realise, from that first day.
